The Details

What We Do We Grow Wozupi’s grounds include several gardens, an orchard, green houses, and a root cellar. A 13-acre vegetable garden yields the majority of Wozupi’s produce. Multiple smaller gardens, such as a Medicine Garden tended by tribal members, are used primarily for education and wellness programs for the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community. To preserve rare, indigenous foods, we plant several heritage varieties of corn, squash and beans. We Keep Bees Along with protecting pollinators by providing habitat and growing organically, we keep our own bees and collect their honey. About 100 honeybee hives make up the six apiaries producing Wozupi’s honey, which is available seasonally at farmers markets and year-round at various stores. We Raise Laying Hens Wozupi’s heritage breed hens – Barred Rock and Road Island Red – lay nutrient-dense, certified-organic eggs. Our eggs’ exceptional flavor comes primarily from what our chickens eat. They forage on their own for bugs and greens in the Wozupi orchard, and we feed them a soy-free feed, which is packed with peas, buckwheat, corn, and Omega-3s from flaxseed meal. We Make Maple Syrup The maple sap starts to flow at the Wozupi sugar bush when temperatures reach above-freezing at the end of winter. We collect the sap from hundreds of trees with a vacuum pump sugaring system, and then boil it down on-site to craft our pure, local maple syrup – a natural, indigenous food. We Educate We provide enriching experiences through a variety of classes, tours, and educational events for adults and children of the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community, the surrounding area, and beyond. Wozupi is also home to the thriving Children’s Garden used as an outdoor classroom in the summers for a variety of youth groups, pre-K to grade 6. We Save Seeds We are committed to preserving Native American heirloom seed varieties through production, seed saving, and donations to other tribal nations that have come together to develop a seed bank.
